Eagles Sight News has gathered that tension is heightening among aspirants vying for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election scheduled for August 16. This follows allegations that some party leaders have resolved to impose Farouk Arisekola-Alao as the candidate.
Other hopefuls are reacting angrily to what they consider a divisive scheme that could fracture the party further, push disgruntled members out, and ultimately weaken the APC’s chances in future elections.
The bye-election was necessitated by the passing of Hon. Olaide Akinremi, who had secured re-election in 2023. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced August 16 as the date for the poll.
While the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has already settled on Mr. Folajinmi Oyekunle as its candidate through a consensus process led by Governor Seyi Makinde, the APC is yet to conduct its primary election.
According to an update sighted on newsspeakonline reliable sources revealed that some aspirants are determined to resist any attempt at imposition. Last week, the state party chairman, Alhaji Olaide Abass, and members of the state executive held a meeting with the aspirants, during which assurances of a fair contest were given. However, it is alleged that certain influential figures within the party are still working behind the scenes to ensure Arisekola-Alao emerges as the flag bearer.
Despite the situation, the aspirants are pressing ahead with their ambitions, expressing hope that party leaders will prioritize internal democracy.
The APC pegged the cost of the nomination form for the House of Representatives ticket at ₦10 million.
Nineteen aspirants have so far indicated interest in the ticket, although it remains uncertain how many will eventually purchase the forms. Notable contenders include a former two-term member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Segun Olaleye; Hon. Wale Olatunji; Mr. Saidi Aderonmu; Mr. Idris Lapade; Mr. Yinka Omikunle; Mrs. Olamide Junaid; Mr. Wasiu Emiola; and Mr. Farouk Arisekola-Alao.
Political analysts observe that allowing a transparent and competitive process would strengthen the APC in Oyo State and boost confidence among prospective aspirants statewide, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
