VeryDarkMan Leads Protest in Anambra Over Fish Magnet CEO’s Murder
Nigerian social media activist, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, led a peaceful protest in Awka, Anambra State’s capital, on Tuesday to highlight the growing insecurity in the region. Eagles Sight News has gathered.
The demonstration comes in response to the recent abduction and killing of Mr. Martins Onyekere, the young entrepreneur and CEO of Fish Magnet, a company specializing in fresh and dried fish.
Last weekend, the activist revealed his presence in the state and announced plans for the rally, which began at Aroma Junction and proceeded to Ring Road Junction in Awka—where the late businessman operated his office. Thousands of youths dressed in black joined the peaceful walk in solidarity.
Ahead of the protest, the Anambra State Police Command issued a warning to the activist. In a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, cautioned the activist:
“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu has issued a stern warning to social media influencer Mr Martins Vincent Otse popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
He cautioned him against making statements or taking actions capable of inciting tension or breaching public peace within the State.”
The police also advised that the bereaved family should be given space to mourn their son without any disruption that could compromise public peace:
“CP Orutugu urged residents and visitors alike to go about their lawful duties without fear, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order. He further advised social media users and public figures to exercise restraint and avoid spreading misinformation or making inciting remarks.”
Despite the warning, the protest continued peacefully and was joined by key figures, including SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Ejimofor Opara (Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Media), and other government officials.
As of the time of reporting, the protest was still in progress.
