Oyo Governor Shares Reservations on Supreme Court’s LG Autonomy Judgment
Eaglessightnews reports that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed his views on the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments, suggesting that it may not be the most pressing issue facing the country.
In a video released on Saturday, on his official Facebook page , the Governor Makinde emphasized the need to address the underlying problems of productivity, hunger, and anger in Nigeria.

The governor’s statement comes in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling, in which a seven-member panel led by Justice Emmanuel Agim declared that the 774 local government councils in Nigeria have the constitutional right to manage their finances autonomously without interference from state governments.
Governor Makinde said, “So the judgment of the Supreme Court, there is local government autonomy, financial autonomy, and all of that, and I will still say it, I think it’s just a distraction. We must face the real issues that we have.”
The governor’s comments have sparked a mixed reaction on social media platform X, with some users criticizing his stance. @BD1010JA, a user with the name Funsho, commented, “When Mr. Peter Obi outlined his plans to transform Nigeria from a consumption-based economy to a productive-driven one if elected in 2024, many of you ridiculed him.”
Another user, @emma_ocheme, Emmanuel K Oche, responded, “Oga Governor, we didn’t say LG autonomy will solve all the problems, but it will go a long way in solving them.”
