INEC Declares PDP’s Folajimi Oyekunle ‘DoN’ Winner of Ibadan North Bye-Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle, popularly known as DoN, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the hotly contested Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election.

Eagles Sight News reports that ,the Returning Officer, Professor Abiodun Oluwadare of the University of Ibadan, made the announcement on Saturday at the Collation Centre in Ikolaba High School, Ibadan.

The victory is significant, because it becomes the  first time in 14 years that the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reclaimed the Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat, ending the decade-long dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The seat was last held by the PDP between 2007 and 2011 under Hon. Gbede Aderemi Waheed. In the 2011 elections, Hon. Abiodun Dada Awoleye of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) won the seat, and after the party’s merger, he continued under the APC platform until 2019. The APC retained control in 2019 with Prince Olaide Adewale Akinremi, popularly known as Jagaban, who represented the constituency until his death in July 2024. With Saturday’s by-election, Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle (DoN) of the PDP has now broken the APC’s hold, marking a historic political comeback for the party in Ibadan North.

According to the official results, Hon. Oyekunle secured 18,404 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Hon. Adewale Olatunji, widely known as Murphy, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 8,312 votes.

This victory means Oyekunle will succeed the late Hon. Musiliu Olaide Akinremi (Jagaban), whose passing created the vacancy and prompted the bye-election.
