Movement Restriction Begins 12am in Ibadan  Ahead of Bye-Election — See Affected Areas

Bye-Election: Police, INEC Announce Movement Restrictions in Major Areas of Ibadan North (See Affected Areas)

Eagles Sight News reports that markets and movement in parts of Ibadan will be restricted on Saturday as the bye-election for the Ibadan North Federal Constituency takes place.

The Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) and the Oyo State Police Command said the measures are to ensure safety and order during the polls. The seat became vacant following the death of Hon. Musiliu Akinremi in 2024.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Police Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, the state Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, announced that markets such as Bodija Market and Agbowo Market, as well as other areas in Ibadan North-East, Ibadan South-West, and their adjoining boundaries, will be affected.

“There will be restrictions on movement from 12 midnight on the election day till 5 pm within Ibadan North, Ibadan North-East, Ibadan South-West, and their adjoining boundaries to ensure safety and security,” Haruna stated.

He added that:

No uniformed personnel will be allowed to escort aspirants to polling units or wards.

Any form of financial inducement or coercion to influence voters is prohibited.

Possession of weapons or instruments of violence near or inside voting areas will attract arrest and prosecution.

Security will be strengthened with convoy patrols, shows of force, intelligence-led raids, stop-and-search operations, and constant surveillance.

Parents, guardians, and community leaders are urged to prevent youths from being used to cause disruption.

In a related development, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, Dr. Adeniran Tella, reiterated the movement restriction and listed twelve wards and registration areas to be covered, including Islamic Mission Primary School, Odoye; St. Stephen Primary School, Inalende; Salvation Army Primary School, Yemetu; Methodist Primary School, NTA; Ikolaba High School, Ikolaba; St. Gabriel Grammar School, Mokola; St. Louis Grammar School, Mokola; Chesire High School, Ijokodo; C&S New Eden Primary School, Mokola; Immanuel College Primary School, Samonda; and Methodist Primary School, Bodija.

Other affected locations include Sango, Eleyele, Apete, University of Ibadan, Agbowo, Agbowo Express, Beere, Oje, Odoye Gate, Basorun, Ashi, Mokola Axis, and Adamasingba Axis.

Meanwhile, all political parties contesting in the election have signed a Peace Accord at the INEC office in Ibadan, pledging to maintain peace before, during, and after the polls. The event was attended by security chiefs, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and representatives of the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Civil Defence Corps, and Amotekun.
