Rivers State Governor Nominates Caretaker Chairmen Amid Political Crisis
Rivers State – Eaglessightnews reports that In a move to address the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has nominated caretaker chairmen for the 23 local government areas of the state.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday night by the Clerk of the House, G.M. Gillis-West, the Governor’s communication to the state House of Assembly, led by factional Speaker, Victor Jumbo, contained the list of nominees.
The development comes as former council chairmen, whose tenure expired on Monday, have refused to vacate their offices, citing the Local Government Amendment Law 2024 enacted by the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly.
The crisis in the state escalated on Tuesday, with protesting youths loyal to Fubara dislodging chairmen who refused to leave their offices. Tragedy struck at the Eberi-Omuma secretariat in Omuma Local Government Area, where a policeman was killed during a clash between supporters of Fubara and those of his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
