Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, has died at the age of 91.

The respected monarch passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday after a brief illness. Sources close to the royal household disclosed that he had been receiving medical attention in recent weeks as his health declined.

His death came just hours after the announcement of the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, his long-time friend and Nigeria’s former president. Buhari died in a clinic in London, United Kingdom, after battling illness for some time.

Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and ruled for over six decades, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in the country’s history. Throughout his reign, he was widely regarded as a symbol of unity, progress, and cultural pride among the Ijebu people.

Under his leadership, Ijebuland witnessed considerable development, including improvements in education, infrastructure, and the promotion of traditional festivals such as the annual Ojude Oba, which became an internationally recognized celebration of Yoruba heritage.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona became Awujale at the age of 26. His tenure spanned Nigeria’s transition from colonial rule to independence and the many changes that followed.

In response to the news, political leaders, royal families, and community members expressed deep sorrow, describing his passing as an immense loss not only to Ogun State but to the entire country.

Plans for funeral rites and official mourning are expected to be announced in the coming days in line with customary practices.

The late Awujale is survived by children, grandchildren, and a legacy that will remain influential for generations to come.
