From Gbede to Don: How PDP Historically Broke Ibadan North’s 14-Year Opposition Long Grip
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made a stunning comeback in Ibadan North Federal Constituency after 14 years in the political wilderness, reclaiming the seat through Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle, popularly known as DoN, in the August 2025 bye-election.
Eagles Sight News gathers that the last time PDP held the constituency was 2007–2011, when Hon. Gbede Aderemi Waheed represented Ibadan North in the House of Representatives. Since then, the seat has been dominated by opposition parties, particularly the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Accord, and later the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Timeline of Ibadan North Federal Constituency Representatives (2007–2025)
2007–2011: Hon. Gbede Aderemi Waheed (PDP) – The last PDP lawmaker before the party’s long absence.
2011–2015: Hon. Abiodun Dada Awoleye (ACN → APC) – Elected under ACN, later part of the merger that formed APC.
2015–2019: Hon. Abiodun Dada Awoleye (Accord / APC faction) – Returned to the House but eventually lost grip as APC consolidated.
2019–2023: Hon. Musiliu Olaide Akinremi (APC, a.k.a. Jagaban) – Cemented APC’s hold on the constituency.
2023–2024: Hon. Musiliu Olaide Akinremi (APC) – Re-elected but passed away in July 2024, creating the vacancy.
2025–date: Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle (PDP, a.k.a. DoN) – Won the bye-election with a margin of over 10,000 votes, marking PDP’s historic return.
With DoN’s victory, the PDP has reclaimed Ibadan North Federal Constituency after 14 years, a symbolic win that party loyalists describe as “restoring the voice of the people” and rebalancing political forces in Oyo State
