Oyo School Alumnus Awards ₦1M to Top Students, Staff to Promote Education
Oyo School Alumnus Donates N1 Million to Outstanding Students and Staff, Counters ‘Education Is a Scam’ Narrative
To encourage academic excellence and recognize dedication, Mr. Babatunde Tijani (popularly known as TJ), an alumnus of Abiodun Atiba Memorial Institute in Oyo, has gifted a total of ₦1 million to top-performing students and staff members during the school’s 44th valedictory service and prize-giving ceremony.
As the Special Guest of Honour, Tijani announced ₦200,000 cash awards for the best students in Science, Arts, and Commerce, along with the overall best graduating student. A similar ₦200,000 cash gift was extended to the school staff as a gesture of appreciation for their unwavering commitment.
“In memory of my late father, Chief Abdul-Lateef Eyitayo Tijani, who served as vice principal of this great institution from 1981 to 1988, and as my humble contribution to the school, I am delighted to award N200,000 each to the best students in Science, Arts and Commerce.
“Additionally, the overall valedictorian will receive N200,000. I am also pleased to gift the principal and teachers of Abiodun Atiba Memorial Institute the sum of N200,000 as a token of appreciation for their tireless efforts in shaping future leaders,” he stated.
Represented by his sister, Ms. Omobola Tijani, he offered words of encouragement to the graduating students, urging them to stay true to their goals and values.
“Congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. Remain steadfast, patriotic, and always remember the children of whom you are. As you move forward, stay curious, be resilient, and pursue your passions with purpose. Go and rule your world, the sky is your starting point,” he advised.
He further acknowledged the role his teachers played in shaping his academic path and personal development.
“Your dedication and mentorship left a lasting impact on me, and I am grateful for all the lessons learned,” he added.
This philanthropic act adds to Tijani’s ongoing support for the school. His past contributions include renovating a six-classroom block, providing 240 modern desks and chairs, installing a borehole, refurbishing the school mosque, and annually sponsoring TJ BAB’S House during the inter-house sports competitions.
During the ceremony, the principal, Mr. Razak Raheem, expressed deep appreciation for Tijani’s continuous involvement in the growth of the institution, particularly in infrastructure and student motivation.
“He has always shown support, especially during events like this. His impact is constantly felt in this school. May God continue to raise him and enlarge his coast,” the principal remarked.
Raheem also commended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for maintaining an environment that supports educators, and advised the graduating class to avoid societal ills and embrace positive values.
“Secondary education is only the foundation. You must make tertiary education your next destination. As you go into the world, be good ambassadors of this great school. Shun societal ills like drug abuse, prostitution, cybercrime and all other negative influences.
“I urge you to continue investing in these children—encourage them, support them, provide for them, and most importantly, pray for them. Make whatever sacrifices are necessary to help them fulfil their potential,” he advised.
A major highlight of the event was the recognition of Memunat Oyetunde as the overall best graduating student. She also earned the award for best science student, taking home a total of ₦400,000. Faizat Oparemi, who topped the Commercial class, and Jewel Olaoba, the best in Arts, each received ₦200,000.
In her acceptance remarks, Oyetunde expressed deep gratitude, describing the awards as a powerful encouragement to aim higher in her academic journey.
