In a move aimed at revitalizing waste management operations across Oyo State, the Chairman of the Oyo State Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA), Honourable Waheed Akanbi Biiro, on Friday, held a strategic engagement with waste consultants and road sweeper supervisors at the OYOWMA Headquarters, Gate, Ibadan.
Eagles Sight News reports that the dual-session meeting was designed to foster transparency, improve coordination, and ensure stronger commitment to environmental cleanliness and sustainable waste management throughout the state.
Consultants Commend Leadership, Pledge Transparency
During the first session with the consultants, Hon. Biiro called for maximum cooperation, transparency, and dedication. He urged all stakeholders to align with the administration’s vision of a cleaner, more functional Oyo State. The consultants, in response, appreciated the Chairman’s leadership style and commended the wisdom he has displayed since assuming office. They pledged their full support and offered prayers for continued divine guidance and success in his tenure.
Supervisors Reaffirm Commitment to Field Operations
In the second session, the General Manager of OYOWMA, Engr. Afolabi, welcomed the road sweeper supervisors and noted the importance of their engagement with the Chairman. He highlighted that zonal operations in Eruwa, Saki, and Oyo had become inactive but gave assurances that these would soon be revived to strengthen field operations. A total of 26 supervisors were present, each introducing themselves and the zones they oversee.
Chairman Biiro: “I’ve Not Come to Make Life Difficult for Anyone”
Addressing the supervisors, Hon. Biiro made it clear that his mission was to work, not to intimidate or dismiss anyone.
“I have not come to make life difficult for anyone, nor intimidate . I have come to work so that the Governor will be proud of our achievements,” he stated.
He referenced his achievements in Ibadan North, where his performance was swift and impactful. He encouraged the supervisors to work diligently, noting that visibility and impact at the grassroots level are essential. Drawing from a lesson he learned as a child, he shared the saying: “Do something, make something, and get something.”
He advised them to treat their subordinates fairly and work harmoniously, reminding them that the Governor is observant and closely monitors development across the state. He also stressed the importance of teamwork and cooperation, warning that “whoever fails to cooperate has already judged themselves.”
Inspiring Stories and Moral Lessons
To inspire the workforce, Hon. Biiro shared real-life stories of dedication and divine favour. He narrated how a street sweeper was elevated by providence after discovering and reporting a significant sum of money at a waste depot—an act of honesty that changed the person’s life.
“When God lifts you, no one can pull you down,” he remarked.
He concluded by encouraging everyone to serve diligently, be courageous like David in the Bible, and uphold integrity and faith in their work.
Engr. Afolabi Calls for Teamwork
Wrapping up the session, Engr. Afolabi expressed appreciation to the Chairman on behalf of the supervisors. He urged them to work hand-in-hand, support one another during emergencies, and maintain a united front in achieving the agency’s goals. He emphasized that success in waste management requires both individual commitment and collective effort.
The meeting ended on a high note, with renewed energy and a shared commitment to reposition Oyo State as a model of effective and ethical waste management.
