Nigeria Must Prioritize Distribution Grid Investment for a Sustainable Energy Future – Ademola Agoro

Abuja, Nigeria — Engr. Ademola Agoro, a leading power system expert and Managing Director of Protogy Global Services Limited, has called for a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s power sector. In light of the country’s ongoing energy challenges, he emphasizes the urgent need to prioritize investments in the distribution grid over the transmission grid to unlock the full potential of the energy sector and drive sustainable growth.

A New Approach to Energy Distribution

“The distribution grid is the critical link between power generation and consumers. Strengthening this infrastructure is key to enhancing energy access and integrating diverse energy sources,” said Engr. Agoro. By enabling the import and export of electricity at 400V, the distribution grid can support the seamless incorporation of energy from solar, wind, biomass, and other renewable sources, significantly improving power availability, particularly in underserved communities.

Encouraging Private Investment and Competition

Engr. Agoro advocates for increased private sector participation in state and community-level distribution grids. He noted, “This model will foster healthy competition among distribution providers, empowering consumers to choose based on service quality and affordability. Such competition will lead to better service delivery, reduced outages, and cost-effective energy solutions.”

Returning Meter Ownership to the State Grid

A key reform proposed is the return of meter ownership to a centralized, state-managed grid authority. “This policy will eliminate monopolistic practices by distribution companies and give consumers the freedom to switch providers without incurring extra costs for new meters,” he explained. Such a move will ensure fairness in access to metering while promoting consumer protection.

Addressing Renewable Energy Bottlenecks

Investments in smart distribution grids with advanced metering and control systems are also critical. These technologies will pave the way for greater integration of renewable energy sources, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting Nigeria’s energy transition goals.

Localized Energy Markets and Energy Security

Engr. Agoro also highlighted the benefits of decentralized grid development. “Localized energy markets will allow communities to trade surplus power or export it to the grid. This reduces transmission losses, improves energy equity, and promotes energy independence,” he said.

A Call for Action

While acknowledging the importance of transmission grid investments, Engr. Agoro reiterated that the immediate priority must be distribution grid infrastructure. “This shift will address Nigeria’s pressing energy challenges, reduce inefficiencies, lower financial losses, and spur economic development,” he concluded.
