Ibadan, Nigeria – In a bid to resolve the lingering chieftaincy crisis in Ibadanland, prominent individuals, including high-ranking traditional titleholders, are mounting pressure on the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rasidi Ladoja, to accept a beaded crown as a monarch.

According to sources, Ladoja has been urged to accept the crown to ease the tension surrounding the Ibadan chieftaincy declaration. The development comes after the release of the Oyo State Government’s gazette on ascension to the throne of Olubadan, which recognizes only crowned Obas as bona fide successors to the throne.

Ladoja had previously declined a crown presented by the late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, and instead sought legal action, which was later withdrawn. He had submitted that “the only crown acceptable to him is that of Olubadan of Ibadanland.”

Stakeholders believe that Ladoja’s acceptance of the crown would sustain the seamless process of selecting the Olubadan. “Otun Olubadan Ladoja enjoys enormous goodwill, having done Ibadanland some good and saved it from different chieftaincy crises,” said one of the Mogajis, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

However, some lawyers have insisted that “some fundamental legal issues will have to be addressed in the new Ibadan Chieftaincy laws to put things in proper perspective.”

Efforts to resolve the issue have also involved Ibadan elders working to calm tensions between Governor Seyi Makinde and ex-Governor Ladoja. All attempts to reach Ladoja’s media aide, Adeola Oloko, for comment were unsuccessful.

The development has generated intense interest in Ibadanland, with many awaiting Ladoja’s response to the pressure from stakeholders.
