“There are indications that chieftains and members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State are divided over the decision of Governor Seyi Makinde to adopt a consensus arrangement in picking the party’s flag bearer for the 2023 general elections.

“After a week-long series of meetings involving stakeholders of the Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), details have emerged regarding those who have emerged ‘consensus’ candidates, with their fate to be decided at primaries.

“Internal crises are currently brewing within the rank and file of the party in most if not all the 33 local government across the state. In the case of Oluyole, the stakeholders reportedly endorsed Akeem Olatunji. His nomination was ratified by the screening committee at the Government House, Agodi. That same day, the committee’s decision was later overruled and primaries was adopted for the federal constituency. However, on Thursday night and Friday night, there are unconfirmed reports that Makinde’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola has been endorsed as the party’s consensus candidate by the same leader that initially adopted Akeem Olatunji.

“In Lagelu state constituency, Alhaja Fatimoh was the stakeholders consensus candidate, which was also ratified and approved by the screening committee. The people of the council were shocked to find out that Akitunde Olajide (AKT ) was brought in and his name was approved.”

Tribune reported that there is another category of aspirants, whose fate hangs in the balance due to a number of other factors.

In arriving at the decisions to either choose or drop aspirants, thus far, Nigerian Tribune gathered that various intrigues played out with party leaders across the state, political office holders and leader of the party in the state, Governor Seyi Makinde, all making varied interventions and arguments.

The arguments have ranged from aspirants’ religion to place of origin vis-à-vis constituency rotational agreement and sharing formula, loyalty to the party, capability to deliver for the PDP in the forthcoming general election and the state governor’s preference.

The various meetings held at the Oyo State Government House, Ibadan and presided over by leader of the party in the state, Governor Seyi Makinde, have seen those who initially had the coast clear for them to be consensus candidate now having to go for primaries while new arguments have thrown up other candidates.

Out of the three senatorial districts in the state, the PDP presently has Kola Balogun representing Oyo South and is seeking to be handed a party’s ticket to run for a second term.

However, there are some forces against his emergence as consensus candidate with calls for primaries to decide his candidacy.

Balogun’s emergence as consensus candidate of the party remains undecided as of time of filing this report.

For Oyo North, a former Secretary of Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of the state, Honourable Akinwale Akinwole is the candidate for Oyo North.

Akinwole emerged the consensus candidate for being from Ogbomoso which was favoured zone as against Oke-Ogun which also makes up the Oyo North Senatorial district.
