Sokoto Sultanate: MURIC Raises Fresh Alarm Over Alleged Bid to Strip Sultan’s Powers

Sokoto Sultanate Under Siege: MURIC Raises Alarm Over Governor’s ‘Power Grab
Eaglessightnews has gathered that the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has sounded the alarm over an alleged plot by Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, to depose the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.
Despite the state government’s denial, MURIC claims that a bill passed by the Sokoto State House of Assembly, the Sokoto Emirate Council Amendment Bill, aims to strip the Sultan of his powers and weaken his influence.
According to Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Executive Director of MURIC, the bill is “an attack on the traditional institution of Sokoto State” and an attempt to “dismantle the Sultanate Council”.
Akintola accused Governor Aliyu of “fascism, totalitarianism, and prebendalism”, citing the recent removal of 15 traditional rulers in the state without due process.
MURIC is calling on the Sokoto State lawmakers to reconsider the bill and protect the Sultanate Council, which it describes as “our pride”.
The development has sparked tensions in the state, with many calling for restraint and respect for traditional institutions.
