BREAKING: Nigeria beat South Africa on penalties to reach AFCON 2023 final

The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated South Africa 4-2 in a penalty shootout to advance to the AFCON 2023 final, currently taking place in Ivory Coast. Intel region reports.

Nigeria edged out South Africa on penalties to book their place in the AFCON 2023 final.

The highly anticipated semi-final saw both teams battle it out for 120 minutes, ending in a 1-1 draw.

But it was the penalty shootout that truly tested the nerves of the players and the fans.

Troost-Ekong converted a penalty in the 67th minute after Victor Osimhen was fouled in the box.

South Africa equalised with a late goal from Teboho Mokoena moments before the end of the game.

The match ended in a 1-1 tie after 120 minutes, with the winner determined in a penalty shootout.

The Nigerian football team has done it again! In a thrilling match that ended in penalties, Iheanacho, Troost-Ekong, Omeruo, and Moffi all stepped up to the plate and converted their shots with ease.

However, even the best can falter, as Ola Aina unfortunately missed his penalty.

Nevertheless, the team’s incredible performance and sheer determination have left us all in awe. Congratulations to the Nigerian team on their undeniable victory.

Nigeria will play either hosts Ivory Coast or DR Congo in the final on Sunday.

There are concerns about the availability of striker, Victor Osimhen for the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash against South Africa.

According to a statement by the team on Monday, the Napoli striker is suffering from abdominal discomfort and has not traveled with the team to Bouaké, the city of Wednesday’s clash.

The 25-year-old can however join the rest of the squad on Tuesday if he is cleared by the team’s medics.

“Members of the team traveled from Abidjan to Bouaké today via a 10 pm Air Cote D’Ivoire flight. Osimhen did not however make the trip as a result of an abdominal discomfort. Team medics confirmed that he has been placed under close watch with a member of the medical team staying behind in Abidjan with him. If cleared by tomorrow morning, he will join the rest of the squad before 5 pm,” the statement read.

Despite scoring only one goal in the tournament so far, Osimhen has been one of the strong performers for the Eagles.

His partnership upfront with Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon has been one of the reasons the team has qualified for their 16th AFCON semi-final.

Nigeria will face South Africa at the Stade De La Paix, Bouake at 6 pm.

EPL: 10-Man Chelsea Edge Out Brighton 3-2

Ten-man Chelsea shrugged off a red card for captain Conor Gallagher to edge Brighton 3-2 while West Ham drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace.

Chelsea recorded just their second Premier League home win of the season against Brighton, despite being reduced to 10 men before half-time.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were cruising midway through the first half after goals from Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill.

Facundo Buonanotte halved the deficit for the visitors shortly before half-time and there was still time for Gallagher to pick up a second yellow card, changing the complexion of the match.

Fernandez restored Chelsea’s two-goal cushion from the penalty spot, but Joao Pedro struck in stoppage time to heap the pressure on the home side.

Brighton were awarded a penalty for a handball by Colwill in the 101st minute but the referee reversed his on-field decision after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor and Chelsea held on.

“Crazy — it’s the most competitive league,” said Pochettino.

“The team is tired, we are all tired but overall happy,” he added. “After Newcastle (a 4-1 defeat), we needed to show a different face. That’s why I’m happy.”

Aston Villa striker Watkins headed home a cross from Moussa Diaby in the 90th minute to rescue a point Unai Emery’s team, which kept them in fourth place.

Earlier, Leon Bailey had cancelled out an opener from Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo before Dominic Solanke put the home side back ahead.

“It shows our resilience, but we are not starting games well away from home,” said Watkins.

“If we can iron that out it will help us. Every game we want to win, we are in good form. We fancy ourselves against anybody.”
