Outrage in Ibadan: Stray Police Bullet Kills WAEC Candidate, Sparks Protest at Govt SecretariatTension gripped parts of Ibadan on Tuesday after a student on his way to write a WAEC examination was fatally struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer. The tragic incident triggered an angry protest as residents marched to the Oyo State Government Secretariat, demanding justice.
Eagles Sight News reports that the victim was heading to his exam centre in the company of his father and sibling when he was hit near Gbagi Market Road. Witnesses claim the bullet came from a police officer reportedly pursuing a suspect.
The student was rushed to Welfare Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, fueling public outrage.
In a heartbreaking display, protesters carried the student’s lifeless body to the secretariat, calling on Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene and ensure accountability.
Comrade Yemi Ezekiel Bello, President of the Save the Poor and Needy Charity Initiative (SPANCI), issued a statement condemning the killing and urging immediate action from law enforcement authorities.
“Dear IGP and stakeholders, kindly investigate the above case as allegedly reported that a man was taking his children to school this morning and some alleged police officers and OYRTMA, while chasing Yahoo boys, and others said while chasing traffic law offenders, started shooting indiscriminately and bullet hit this little boy and killed him.
According to the report, it was confirmed that the officers conducted themselves unprofessionally which led to the death of this little boy whose father said he has been taking care of them and refused to remarry since their mother left 7 years ago.”
As of press time, the police had yet to release an official response to the incident. The community continues to demand justice as the tragic loss casts a shadow over the ongoing WAEC exams.
