Owerri, Imo – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) executives in Imo State have resigned from their various positions in the state chapter of the party’s leadership. Collins Opuozor, the PDP publicity secretary, along with other party leaders, disclosed the development to journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Sunday, June 18, while announcing their resignation from the party.

The aggrieved PDP executives alleged that the party candidate in the forthcoming November governorship election in the state, Samuel Anyanwu, was deploying the instrument of violence, and intimidation against them while making attempts to harm them.

Anyanwu emerged as the governorship candidate of the PDP in the forthcoming election in the state and was subsequently listed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The PDP candidate will be contesting against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate and sitting governor of the state, Hope Uzodinma, who is seeking re-election to his second term in office.

The November election in Imo State is one of the off-season elections in Nigeria and it will be done alongside two other states, which are Kogi and Bayelsa. Like in Imo State, the APC is also the ruling party in Kogi State, while the PDP is the ruling party in Bayelsa State, giving the upper hand to the umbrella party in the south-south state in the forthcoming election.

Recall it that earlier the camp of Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, in the PDP has defeated that of Atiku Abubakar, the ex-presidential candidate of t in the House of Reps. It was learned that Kingsley Chinda, a strong ally of Wike, was nominated as a consensus candidate of the PDP Reps caucus for the position of minority leader in the Lower Chamber. The choice of Chimba did not go down well with PDP leaders in Atiku but Atiku’s preferred candidate, Oluwole Oke, reportedly stepped down from the race.
